How to use a Podcast to Share Your Authentic Voice
OK, if you’ve read my post on how blogging can help you find your authentic voice, you might think that now advocating for a podcast makes me a bit of a hypocrite. But hear me out!
And I have a couple of qualifiers, too. If you’re really not comfortable at the idea of being recorded, then don’t push yourself. But put a podcast on the back burner as something that you might come back to. And if you’re just starting your content marketing journey, then a blog is easier.
However, if you’re looking to take things up a notch, then a podcast can be a great addition to your content output. And to make it as accessible as possible, you should think about having a blog or at least written shownotes to accompany it.
Right, with that out of the way, let’s get into it!
Share Your Authentic Voice
If you didn’t read that blog, then the core message in it is about being yourself, being different and unique and talking about what matters to you. A podcast does the same thing. And depending on what it is you do, it can be a great way to stand out from your competitors, especially if you put a fun spin on a traditional industry.
Consistently creating content in any format will really help you to hone your unique style. You’ll find your tone of voice, words and phrases you love to use, and perhaps even coin a tagline or two. People will see a post or an article from you and immediately know you’re the author.

A podcast gives an extra dimension to that authentic voice. The listener gets the sense that you’re speaking directly to them, straight into their ear. It creates an intimacy – you’re using words that resonate with them. You’re talking about issues they care about. And you’ve made the effort to record your thoughts so you can share them.
It creates a sense of immediacy, too. Building the know, like and trust factor (yes, even I get a bit fed up of that phrase, but the principle holds!) takes time. And while a podcast doesn’t leapfrog you to the front of the trustworthy queue, it does speed things up a bit.
Your Audience Travels With You
While people tend to be static when reading a blog, a podcast can be listened to in the gym, while walking the dog or making the dinner. Personally, I can only listen to shows when cooking as I’m on autopilot. At the gym I get distracted and fall over. You might be fine.
They’re taking you with them wherever they go, they’re listening to your authentic voice and your unique take on the world, and they’re getting a better understanding of what you do, how you do it and who you do it for.
Once they’ve listened to one show, if they like what they hear, they simply click on to the next episode. Binge listening to your podcast really helps them to get to know you better. And if you’ve got good shownotes, they can follow links to find out more!
What Should I Talk About?
Most podcasts tend to be about a topic the presenter knows a lot about. Peter Crouch talks about life as a footballer. Steven Bartlett talks about being successful in business (and sometimes shares misinformation). Taylor Swift’s current squeeze (do we still say that? Are we allowed to?!) talks about American football with his brother.
So, it makes sense for you to do that too. If you want your podcast to be informative and as a (slow burn) marketing tool to get people to do business with you, then make your expertise your topic. Just make sure that you use your authentic voice to talk about how you do things differently.
On the other hand, if you’re passionate about something that’s not directly business-related, that’s fine too. If you have a hobby that people will want to know about, then by all means, share it.
But if your goal is to be seen as a thought leader and someone who’s striving to make a positive change, talk about that instead. Share your world view, discuss innovations to improve access to education, save the planet, boost equality.
Or you could have a combination of the two. My podcast, The Apple Cart, is about being disruptive and creative in business. I’m not telling my listeners how to write a blog or create a content strategy. I AM entertaining them, interviewing interesting people and giving them inspiration.
