Help! What do I Write? Ideas for Writing Blogs
As I recently completed a 90-day blog challenge, it would be reasonable to assume that I don’t struggle for blog topics. As a writer, I can theoretically write about anything, and you’ll see that my blogs are about things that interest me as well as how-to information guides.
But what if you’re tasked with creating the content for your company’s blog and you don’t know where to start? First of all, your blog doesn’t have to be long and you need to update it enough to stay top of mind for existing and potential customers – a minimum of 300 words once or twice a week should be fine, depending on your industry.
So what can you write? One easy blog to write is a weekly roundup – what have you or others in the business been up to? Where have you been and who did you meet? Include a behind the scenes picture to give more information – readers love to feel included. To make it easier for yourself, have a piece of paper handy or a Word document saved on your desktop where you can make notes during the week, and create a post from that.
Interviews
You could also write a post in the style of an interview. Speak to a new hire or the CEO and find out a bit more about them. You could interview long-standing customers to learn about their business and what they like about your product or service – this gives them publicity and is a great testimonial for you that looks more natural.![]()
You could even speak to your competitors! Obviously you may not want to promote someone else’s business over yours, but what about people in the same sector but with a different set of customers? For instance, if you’re a solicitor dealing with family law, speak to someone who does work disputes or criminal law. It could work out well for both of you if you get cross referrals.
Blogs about Events and Awards
If you’re launching new products or services, talk about them in blogs. Have pictures of the item or people using the service, explain how it will benefit the customer and how it fits with the business. Or give an update on something introduced earlier in the year.
Talk about an event you’ve been to recently. Have you been on a training course to brush up your skills, or attended a conference? Maybe you met an expert in your field or perhaps someone famous. Again, pictures are good here.
Have you won an award? There are always a lot of business award opportunities, both locally and nationally. Even if you were only nominated or a runner up, it’s still great to be acknowledged by your peers.
Talk about what it means to you personally, the business and what you will do to make sure you win next year! It’s important to show how this will benefit your customers too, otherwise they won’t be interested.
Other Ideas for Blogs
Industry news isn’t necessarily going to mean much to most of your customers, even if your work is B2B. However, if there are changes in legislation which could affect them, write a blog explaining it as simply as possible. You can also write about new developments in technology and so on if it fits with what you do.
Another good thing to do is answer questions. What do people ask you about your business most often? Make a list of them and write a blog post for each of them, giving plenty of information but with no jargon.
Finally, to generate some ideas, get a big piece of paper and in the middle write down a word or phrase that is relevant to your business, and let your mind wander.
Jot down other words that connect to your starting word, even loosely. Pick up on anything that stands out and note words that follow on. You should come up with some things to talk about and maybe even some business ideas!
